Cobham Air Routes

Cobham Air Routes Limited was formed on the 3rd of May 1935 by Sir Alan Cobham to operate services between Croydon and Guernsey. The twice daily service started on the 6th of May 1935, the first sector from Croydon to Bournemouth via Portsmouth was flown by an Airspeed Envoy with the Bournemouth to Guernsey sector flown by a six-passenger Westland Wessex.  There were plans for a hangar to be erected at Christchurch .Pilots wereMessrs.C Bebb, P Beresford and R Ogden. However after the Wessex(G-ADEW) suffered an engine failure and ditched south on the Needles on the 4th of July 1935 with the loss of the pilot Mr R Ogden,services ceased and the airline was sold to Olley Air Services.The sole passenger on board was picked up by a passing vessel , the "Stanmore" and taken to Fowey.
